W H A T
We use social skills to facilitate interaction and communication with others. These are the words we use, the spoken and unspoken social queues, and the physical actions to communicate our intentions and perceptions. This also refers to the social rules and relationship rules that are created and communicated, in verbal and nonverbal ways. The process of learning these skills is called socialization.
W H Y
At OTOV, we know the importance of feeling like you’re part of the community. We value imparting these skills on the littlest of villagers and wish to create an inclusive environment for those hoping to enhance their child’s social skill opportunities, regardless of academic or cognitive abilities. This inclusion will be pursued with compassion and grace to all members of our tribe.
H O W
During our play dates, we address an assortment of skills including: making new friends, stranger danger, eating at restaurants, conversations, parallel play, interactive play and cooperative play, along with speech and language skills to facilitate this play. Learning goes beyond playtime. We know this is practice for future opportunities to facilitate positive, healthy interactions with others. We serve each child and family by distributing a status report that includes tips and tricks for working on the class theme at home or in the community.
